Andrew Cuomo Claims He's the Last Person Donald Trump Wants as New York City Mayor: 'We Clashed Every Single Day'
The political drama heats up as former New York Governor Andrew Cuomo recently appeared on The View to discuss his campaign for New York City mayor and his contentious history with former President Donald Trump. This comes shortly after the show featured Cuomo’s mayoral rival, Zohran Mamdani, sparking a fascinating contrast between the two candidates.
Cuomo boldly stated that he is "the last person" Trump would want to see leading New York City, emphasizing the intense daily battles they had during the height of the COVID-19 pandemic when Cuomo was governor and Trump was president. "New Yorkers witnessed the showdown every day," Cuomo explained during the October 6 broadcast. "We were at odds constantly."
He went on to describe the extent of Trump's opposition, recalling how the former president wielded his power aggressively against him. "Trump came at me with all his threats and might—he even threatened to jail me, had the Department of Justice investigate me twice, and tried to cut off federal funding," Cuomo revealed.
The conversation took an intriguing turn when co-host Joy Behar asked if Cuomo believed Trump secretly hoped Mamdani would win the mayoral race. Cuomo didn’t hesitate: "Mamdani is a gift for him! A gift."
This sentiment was echoed by fellow hosts Sara Haines and Alyssa Farah Griffin. Griffin added, "Ahead of the midterms, Trump definitely wants Mamdani to win. I can confirm he’s not a fan of Cuomo."
But here’s where it gets controversial: when Sunny Hostin mentioned a New York Times report citing three sources who claimed Cuomo had a phone call with Trump, Cuomo firmly denied it.
Cuomo then shared his perspective on why Trump might back Mamdani, suggesting it’s a strategic move to paint the Democratic Party as "communists." "It plays right into Donald Trump’s hands," Cuomo said. "He’s using this as an excuse to try to take over New York, which he has openly stated he plans to do."
This raises a provocative question: Is Trump’s support for Mamdani a genuine political preference, or a calculated tactic to deepen divisions within the Democratic Party? And what does this mean for New York City’s future leadership?
The View airs weekdays at 11/10c on ABC.
