A Culinary Adventure: Unveiling Cornwall's Hospitality Secrets
Cornish students embark on a journey to discover the magic of their local seafood and hospitality industry, but there's more to it than meets the eye!
In a unique initiative, students from Wadebridge School's food technology department were treated to a seafood masterclass, offering a glimpse into Cornwall's vibrant hospitality and tourism sector. The session focused on filleting Cornish mackerel, a skill that these young pupils mastered before grilling their catch on barbecues.
Sue Willmott, the school's careers advisor, emphasized the impact of such activities: "They inspire our students to consider careers in hospitality and equip them with skills that transcend any profession."
This initiative is part of Wadebridge School's dedication to introducing 14-15-year-olds to the local hospitality and tourism industry, an industry that plays a significant role in Cornwall's economy, representing 15% of its total economy with an annual expenditure of £2 billion and employing over 35,000 people across the region.
The cookery session was a collaborative effort, hosted by renowned entities including the Paul Ainsworth Collection, Truro and Penwith College, and the Cornwall Hospitality Collective, with a special appearance by a grill master from Kamado Joe.
Paul Dodd, operations director of The St Enodoc Hotel at the Paul Ainsworth Collection in Padstow, highlighted the importance of these opportunities: "Teaching sustainability, local produce, and the art of simple yet great food is crucial. These experiences show students that hospitality is about more than long hours; it's about fostering community, creativity, and connections, and having a blast while doing it!"
But here's where it gets controversial: Is hospitality just about the long hours, or does it offer a more fulfilling career path? And this is the part most people miss: the industry's potential to inspire and empower young people. What are your thoughts?
